About the Conference

The near surface provides most needed space and resources for human reproduction, survival and development. Rational utilizing and protecting the near surface is irreplaceably important to human civilization. With China's rapid economic development and accelerated urbanization process, the near surface material that is closely related to human existence is constantly changed from its original state in different ways, such as processing, reprocessing, polluting, remediating, stripping, excavating, filling, compacting, and drilling, etc. Human activities due to the fast urbanization and population growth have also caused serious damage to the near surface environment around the world, resulting in frequent geohazards, which bring huge lost to people’s lives and property. It is a challenge to prevent such damage while keeping a high rate of economic growth. The accelerate development of urbanization puts forward higher requirements on near-surface environmental protection and rational use of underground space.

As a branch of geophysics, near-surface geophysics can be effectively applied to the detection and assessment of rock soil slopes, ground deformation, mine disasters, dam damage, land and water conservation, and protection and improvement of the environment. The geophysical techniques used are non-intrusive, non-destructive, cost-effective, large-scale or small-scale, and can remotely acquire three and even four dimensional data that represent underground structures. Due to broad applications of geophysical techniques in the environmental and engineering fields, they are of great significance for the sustainable development of the human society.
